December Notes and Paddles

January Meeting
The next meeting will be held on Tuesday, January 5th at 7:00 pm in the Tensaw Theater at Five Rivers. The new year brings in a new president for MBCKC, Tracy Lannie. Tracy will talk a little about her goals for this year and will ask for club members input/suggestions as well.

Jim Felder, Executive Director of the Alabama Scenic River Trail, will be our guest speaker. He will present with a slide show promoting the Alabama Scenic River Trail (ASRT) and give information on future events to be held. The ASRT is the longest trail contained within one state in the United States. For more information on the ASRT, go to:

December Notes
What a great way to end the year! Amanda Cox brought the cypress strip canoe that she has been building for several months now. What a beauty! The craftsmanship was amazing and it was interesting to hear the technique she is using in constructing the vessel. Amanda has committed to coming back with the finished product in the near future. Now, that is something to look forward to!

Rob Nykvist also gave an overview of the 'Local Launch Sites' web page on google maps that he has been working on for over a year now. (see the link to the right) This is a great resource for paddlers to learn more about local put-ins and paddle spots. And, it sounds as if Rob just may have some 'collaborators' to help him with his project.

December's meeting was Maggie Pyles last month as club president. MBCKC wishes to express their appreciation for the efforts and hard work that Maggie put forth in planning the club meetings, etc. Maggie says she hopes to lead more paddles as a club member next year.

How do I obtain a permit to paddle on Eglin Air Force Base?

You can obtain the permit by mail (recommended) or you can apply in person at the Jackson Guard at Eglin (you will be required to watch a movie about unexploded ordnance). Please call the number listed below to confirm that you enclose everything they need in your request. If you hear anything other than what is posted below, please let me know!

Please note that permits are valid from Oct.1 thru Sept. 30 of each year. When ordering permits by mail, please allow three weeks for delivery (ed. note, I usually see them in about a week). Send your requests to:

Eglin Air Force Base
Natural Resources Division, ACC/EMSN
107 Highway 85N
Niceville, FL 32578

Specify the number and type of permits desired together with the proper payment and proper identification, or a copy of anything with a date of birth on it, or your old permit. Payment of $12 should be made by money order, certified or cashier's check payable to AFO Eglin AFB, Florida. Personal checks are also accepted, with proper identification.

The Natural Resources Branch of Eglin is open Monday through Thursday from 7:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Friday from 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., and Saturday from 7:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. only.
