In other news:
Rob N. has started a Yahoo! club called paddlemobile that we can use to post and share photos, trip information, paddling stories, paddling invitations, advice, whatever. This is a new thing for us, and there may be some bugs to work out, but I recommend giving it a try! (For example, I had trouble logging in the first time, but once I got in it worked great.) Click here to take a look, and e-mail Rob at paddlemobile@yahoo.com if you have questions or would like to join.

Attention Slackers:
Larry Mickelsen, RandLSparky@aol.com, writes:

I would like to paddle across the bay, soon. I have paddled the length so far and now I need to go across the bay. I figure on making it a simple paddle from, say, the bay front park to the battleship, by way of the I-10 bridge system, or up the cut north of the causeway, your choice. Let me know if any one wants to paddle in the heat of the day. We can make this as SAFE as you want just by the route we take, OK?

MICKELSEN. not jr. the crazy one.
Bob's Surprise Paddle and the Pelican Point Triathlon updates:

Gene writes us:

1. Bob's Surprise is to meet at Busby's Fish Camp, on Hwy 225, 1-mile north of Sp. Fort, at 6:00 p.m., this Wednesday, June 20. Bring a flashlight. I believe that the boat launch fee is $3.00 and is well worth it to me knowing that my car is safe.

2. Pelican Point Triathlon update. This is becoming a huge event. There are already 176
participants and well over 200 are expected! They have asked for our assistance from everything from ground support to kayak/canoe safety boats. The Daphne Search and Rescue folks should also be out there to provide motor boat support as well as emergency services. Helpers should be at Pelican Point (mouth of Weeks Bay) by 6:20 a.m., Saturday, June 30 This would seem like a great activity for our members to support and I hope that a lot of us will be able to do so.

Anyone wishing to help, or just get more information should contact Jeff Pollock, Assistant Director PPT, at 633-6482 (Carotop111@aol.com ); or Chris Hendricks, Attn Triathlon, 915 Hillcrest Rd., Mobile AL 36695.

For information about other scheduled paddles, please see the calendar of events, below.

Attention slackers: The rain has passed! Somebody needs to schedule a slacker paddle and e-mail me the details (time, meeting place, your phone and e-mail, and a description of the "skill level" of the paddle), and I'll post them here. You don't have to be a paddling expert, it doesn't have to be a big production, all you have to do is paddle and be safe. Let's revive the Slackers Club! jrobber@worldnet.att.net

(I'd do some slacking off myself in this lovely weather, but I'm on a short work deadline this week. Heavy sigh.)

Click here for the marine forecast -- it may help you decide where to paddle.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS (FAQs)

General Information:

1. We e-mail our monthly newsletter to anyone who requests it from Gene at boothecg@bellsouth.net. Gene also snail-mails our newsletter to those members who request it. Contact Gene if you would like to receive a newsletter in either format.

2. We are a group of people who enjoy paddling and also enjoy sharing our experiences with others. We are not a formal organization. Our intention is for safety to always be the first priority. It is up to each individual to decide for him/herself whether or not the paddling conditions for each event are within their enjoyment and skill range. Everyone must be responsible for their decision as to whether or not to participate in each event. The coordinator of the paddle should be able to assist with information on the expected paddle conditions. However, always remember that the weather and other conditions can, and quiet often do, change both quickly and dramatically.

3. It is always a good idea to contact the trip coordinator for any paddling trip to let them know if you plan to attend. They can contact you with important information, such as trip cancellation, etc. Also, thanks to the paddlers who choose to carry a trash bag to collect rubbish along the way. They make it nicer for everyone.

We had a great monthly meeting last night. Standing room only! -- there were several interruptions to add more chairs for late arrivals, and by the end of the meeting people were standing in the hall to watch Dr. Allen Tubbs' excellent presentation on local aquatic vegetation. Somebody joked that soon we're going to have to start meeting in the parking lot to have room for all our members!

Stay tuned to this website for a calendar of June paddling trips. If you would like to receive a calendar and other updates by e-mail, please e-mail Gene at boothecg@bellsouth.net. If you would like something posted to this webpage, please e-mail me at jrobber@worldnet.att.net. (Sorry, we still can't post photos here.)

To all you slackers: A lot of interest was expressed last night in getting the Slackers Club in gear again, and I suggested we try using this website to communicate about slacker trips. FYI, the Slackers Club is an informal sub-group of the MBCAKC that consists of people who don't have jobs, people who have jobs with irregular schedules, people who like to paddle on the spur of the moment at odd hours, and just plain slackers. If the urge strikes you to go for a paddle and you want some company, e-mail me at jrobber@worldnet.att.net AND Bruce at bzboater@earthlink.net, and one of us (depending on who's in town and on-line) will post your paddle here ASAP. Be sure to include the time and place you propose to paddle, and your phone number and e-mail address in the body of your e-mail. We'll cut-and-paste your e-mail directly onto the website, so other slackers can contact you directly if they want to join your paddle.

Program for meeting on Tuesday: Have you ever wondered what is in bloom at what time and where to go to see it, or what is the name of that stuff that clogs up your rudder and chokes up the passageways? Dr. Allen Tubbs will help with questions like these by presenting a much-needed program on the aquatic vegetation in our area. This will be interesting; try not to miss it. Tuesday, June 5, 7:00 p.m., at the Fairhope Yacht Club.

If it's not too windy after the meeting, I'll probably put in right there at the Yacht Club and go for a moonlight paddle. Bring your boat and a flashlight if you'd like to join me.

!!!!!!! Monthly Meeting !!!!!!!

The next monthly meeting of the MBCAKC will be Tuesday, June 5, at 7:00 p.m, at the Fairhope Yacht Club. Meetings are held the first Tuesday of each month, same time, same place. Monthly schedules of paddling trips are set at these meetings.

In other news: Hi, it's me, Julie, again. I'm in town and on-line, while Bruce is temporarily off-line, and will be back soon. Holler if you need anything (or if you want to go paddling!): jrobbber@worldnet.att.net

I don't know what the program is for the June meeting next Tuesday, but if somebody wants to e-mail me and tell me what it is, I'll be glad to post it here. I'm sure it will be very cool, as always.

Yes, it's confusing with everybody in and out of town all summer, but we'll try to keep this website running and up-to-date somehow! If you want to help us out with that, please e-mail me. It only takes minimal computer-literacy to update this page.

Maybe you noticed that this page was totally off-line for several days a couple of weeks ago. That's because the T-1 provider for our host, blog*spot, totally crashed and went off-line, and it took the good folks at Pyra Labs (who run blog*spot) several days to get another provider on-line. Hey, remember, it's free, and it's also some pretty innovative stuff Pyra is doing, so please bear with us and be patient.
