March Meeting

Our guest speaker for March will be Joe Cuhaj, VP Publicity/Alabama Hiking Trail Society and author of several books (including co-author of Paddling Alabama). Mr. Cuhaj will be talking about the Alabama Hiking Trail Society and give us the inside take on their exciting 7th annual conference which will be held at 5 Rivers, March 6th and 7th

February Notes
Thanks to Ron and Suzie Smith, two of MBCKC's newest members, for the presentation on 'proper clothing for cold water paddling'. It is most important to consider proper clothing for the environment in which one is paddling before hitting the water. Also, thank you to Tom Meyer for sharing his photos of past "Paddle Bayou Lafourche" trips.

The paddle is usually an all day trip, so come prepared with plenty of food, snacks, drinks, bug spray, sun-tan lotion, extra clothes, rain jacket, PFD - all the normal gear.

February Meeting

Tom Meyer will be talking about the paddling event "Paddle Bayou Lafourche" which will be held from March 26 - 29 this year. Also, Tracy Lannie talked about posting paddle invitations on the website for those of you interested in leading a paddle or inviting others to paddle with you.

January Notes
A special thanks to both Mimi Fearn and Karen Jordan for their presentations on January 7th. Karen spoke about geocaching. Many of our club members have already participated in the sport of geocaching, and it seemed like many others are now seriously thinking about it.Dr. Fearn gave an educational presentation on the history of Dog River and how the growth of our area has affected the river. She also spoke about ideas for "Dog River Kayak/Canoe Races and Paddles. For anyone interested in helping plan the "Dog River Activities", contact Mimi Fearn at mfearn@usouthal.edu or call 460-6381.

Meet Time/Place: Meet at Pilot Truckstop at I-65 & US 43 at 10:45 a.m.
Notes: We will be departing for the launch site at 11:00 a.m. Steele Creek Park, Satsuma, AL Launch is Free (Unless things have changed) Easy Distance about 6 miles. Expected time on water: 2-3 hours. Anticipate being back by 2:30-3:00 p.m. Rob plans to explore Gunnison Creek for his first time. Gunnison Creek wanders north from Steele Creek Park up about 3 miles before crossing under I-65, then another quarter mile later, it crosses under U.S. 43 where it looks like it gets too small to navigate.
Experience Level: Can you handle 50 degree temperatures for 3 hours? This will be a leisurely exploratory paddle, 2-3 mph average speed.
Second Wind Paddle: For those so inclined, after a short break back at Steele Creek Park, Rob plans to do a second paddle going up Steele Creek and back (less than 2 miles round trip).
Safety Warning: Water temperatures are still very cold. Dress appropriately. You may want to bring a change of clothes along

January Meeting

Good food and good 'paddle tales' were shared at December's meeting. The club presented Harriet with a 'kayak photo-memory book' in recognition of her outstanding contributions to and support of our club. We also welcomed our new club president, Maggie Pyle. Maggie will begin leading our meetings in January under the guidance of Harriet.

December Meeting

Hello to all of our wonderful Grandman Volunteers!
You all have been such wonderful volunteers for us in the past, we are hoping that some of you may have some time to help us out with an upcoming event. Mobile Baykeeper, MAWSS and Five Rivers are hosting the Wyland Clean Water Mobile Learning Center. This is a hands-on exhibit developed by the Wyland Foundation to teach children about the importance of water in our world. There is a brief description on our web site (www.mobilebaykeeper.org).

November Meeting
The next meeting will be Tuesday, November 4, 2008 in Delta Hall. Delta Hall is the middle building, immediately west of the Tensaw Theater which we usually meet in.
The Second Annual MBCKC Paddling Photo Contest will take place during this meeting.

Categories : 1. Flora 2. Landscape/Waterscape 3. Boat (with or without Paddlers) 4. Birds/Wildlife
Photographs must be taken while on a paddle. Photographs may be in color or black and white and must be NO Larger than 8x12 No digitally enhanced/altered photographs please. For judging purposes please title your entry. Awards will be given for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place in each of the four categories listed above. Bring your mounted or framed photograph to the November 4th meeting. Entries will be judged by MBCKC members. Attach the following information to the back of your entry: Name, Subject/Category, and Title

MBCKC T-Shirts - ORDERS FOR SHIRTS NO LONGER BEING ACCEPTED Place your order with Harriet King-Ingraham on or before the November 4th meeting. Shirts will be ordered after the meeting with delivery on or before the December meeting.

Meet: Meeting at Wilcox Exit (north side) on I-10 at 8:15 a.m. - will caravan to the put-in. We will be running a shuttle from put-in to take-out.
More Notes: Paddle length will be 5-8 miles depending on route. Don't miss this opportunity - blooms and beauty should be peak at this time. Bring all normal paddling gear, plus a Dry change of clothes in the event you spill. Bring drinks, lunch and snacks. October Meeting:
The next meeting will be held on Tuesday, Oct. 7 at 7pm (Tensaw Theater/Five Rivers Delta Resource Center). Anna Keene of the Alabama Coastal Foundation will give her previously scheduled presentation on their organization and some specifics of the Coastwatch program (which could give us kayakers a chance to volunteer for specific duties in different areas of the coast). She will also discuss the Osprey Trail they are currently working on.

It is time to renew Recreation Permits for Eglin AFB (Boiling Creek Paddles)
Passes expire Sept. 30th. New passes will begin being issued on Sept. 23; you can mail your info and payments in now to avoid delays. They will begin processing permits on Sept.23. The fee is still $10. If renewing, please include a copy of your old permit if possible. Also, the following must be included: Name, Address, DOB, phone # of each person obtaining a permit. Checks can be made payable to Jackson Guard. For mailing address, click on the appropriate link to the right. For further information, call (850)882-4164.

It's been 5 years since the club had shirts made - time to do it again. Cost is determined by the number of shirts that are ordered, but $12 each will be the high end, and possibly as low as $9 each on the bottom, based on quantity ordered.
Harriet King-Ingraham will be handling this exchange. Please stay posted for further details. But this much has already been decided:
-Authentic Pigment is the shirt brand - they tend to run loose in size and do not shrink. This is the brand that Five Rivers Outfitters has at their store - stop by to see how the sizing is if you want.
-There will be 2 or 3 colors from which to choose.

September's Meeting Notes:
Steve Delker, USCG Auxiliary, held a briefing on paddling safety. He covered many important topics such as wearing the proper pfd (life jacket), wearing appropriate clothing (for both weather and visibility), having enough food, water, supplies, and gear (including rescue/safety gear)for the unexpected, practicing rescue skills, and knowing your physical abilities/limits and paddling within them. Take next left over the RR tracks (there is a Steel Creek Lodge sign on rt on Hwy 43) Cross the RR tracks bear left go 1 to 1 1/2 miles.When you see the sign that says Steele Creek 1/2 mile look for a very sturdy yellow gate.Go through the gate on a gravel tree lined rd down to the boat launch.

September Meeting - Update:
Anna Keene's presentation has been postponed until the October 7th meeting. Steve Delker will still be giving his briefing on safety.

Directions:From Hwy 59, head south and turn right onto West Beach Blvd. Be in the right lane when the road splits off (immediately after Pier 33 Convenience Store on the right) and the road is now West Lagoon Avenue. Continue past 10th and 11th and the duplex is between 11th and 12th on the right side of the road(immediately after 2 huge salmon/pumpkin colored buildings). # 1248 is painted seafoam green with white trim and faded burgundy doors. August Meeting
The next meeting will be held Tuesday, August 5th, 7pm at the Tensaw Theater / 5 Rivers Delta Resource Center. Bob Andrews will present a slideshow on paddling St. Vincent Island National Wildlife Refuge, a kayaking hot-spot on the Gulf Coast. This undeveloped barrier island offers paddlers unique habitats of both tidal marshes and freshwater lakes and streams. Don't miss the opportunity to learn about another great place to paddle!


July Meeting Notes:
Wow! What a turn-out at the last meeting! 120 persons attended the Premier of The Mobile-Tensaw Delta presented by Discovering Alabama’s Roger Reid.
What great videography; the images of the delta were so vivid that it was the next best thing to actually being there! Thank you Roger for sharing your time and the beautiful film with us!

AUg. 2 - 12, 2008 'Kayaking for Kids' Alabama's Log A Load for Kids, a statewide program sponsored by the Alabama Loggers Council and the Alabama Forestry Association, has announced that three forest industry professionals, Mark Byal, Brent Williams and Allen Knight, will embark upon a 333-mile kayak trip down the Alabama River from Montgomery to Mobile Aug. 2-12. This 11-day "Kayaking for Kids" event is part of the organization's ongoing efforts to raise funds and awareness for the state's two Children's Miracle Network hospitals: USA Children's & Women's Hospital in Mobile and Children's Hospital of Alabama in Birmingham.
The kayakers will kick off the event with a pre-launch celebration at Montgomery Marina on the evening of Aug. 1 prior to embarking on their journey the next day. Eleven days and 333 miles later, they hope to paddle into Battleship Park in Mobile, arriving at approximately 5 p.m. on Aug. 12. You can join in on one day or several days of this paddle. *October - Florida Paddlers Rendezvous Oct 30 - Nov 2, 2008 - MBCAKC has been specifically invited to attend (as well as other out of state groups). This year the Rendezvous will be held at Hillsborough River State Park and is a fun-filled four days of paddling on the Tampa Bay area rivers, estuaries, and the Gulf of Mexico. July 13th, Sunday Late Afternoon Pelican Point Paddle

Put-in/ Meeting Place: Meet at Pelican Point (at the end of Highway 1).
Notes: I again plan to keep near the shore and paddle up the west side of Weeks Bay. There's houses, then a little marsh, then Camp Beckwith. It's easy to go beyond the Camp. How far we go will depend on the group, the waves, etc. I plan to return before dark. Definitely bring pfd and water. Bring sunscrean, bug spray, and a snack if you want. Call me if you're even considering coming so I can contact you if plans change. I'll show up at the launch site and make a decision there if the weather is questionable. Last week it rained lots of places but was fine at Pelican Point. My land line is 990-5575 and my e-mail is wardn@earthlink.net. That's where you should let me know if you're coming. June Notes and Paddle Information

July Meeting
The next meeting will be held Tuesday, July 1, 2008 at the Tensaw Theater / 5 Rivers Delta Resource Center. This will be a meeting not to miss!....a premiere of the show The Mobile-Tensaw-Delta Revisited presented by the Alabama Public Television show Discovering Alabama. One of the very first Discovering Alabama episodes was “The Mobile-Tensaw Delta.” This new show is not so much an update as it is a new look at the Delta after the Forever Wild and other purchases that have preserved more than 107,000 acres. Doug Phillips and/or Roger Reid will be present to premiere this show for us - and be available for questions and answers and basic discussion. We are most fortunate to be able to view this show before release and in the presense of those responsible for making Discovering Alabama available to our state.
There have been some Mobile-Tensaw Delta Special Addition DVD’s created for this occasion. The DVDs will include Doug’s first show in the Delta produced in 1988 and the new show produced in 2008. They can be purchased for $20.

June 8,2008 Upper Magnolia River Paddle

Meet: 1:30 pm Shell Station on Hwy 98 and Cty Rd 49 in the city of Magnolia Springs
(Careful, Cty Rd 49 comes out in two places---go to the Shell Station)
Notes: Repeat of a popular paddle from 2007. It's casual and relaxing, there's opportunity for swimming, and it's easy to leave early. We'll put in at the Rock St. put in and stay in the no wake zone, which boaters are good to honor. We'll head up river and soon be in areas the power boaters cannot even access. It's possible to get out in a shallow place and play in the water. We'll retrace our path and pass the put in. People can leave early if they must. We'll continue downriver until just before making a wake becomes legal. On our final return we can swim from the sandbar across from the put in. Let's have another fun, easy paddle.
Meeting Place/Time: 1:30 pm Shell station on Highway 98 and cty rd 49 in the city of Magnolia Springs. (Careful, cty rd 49 comes out in two places---go to the Shell station.)
Notes: We'll put in at the Rock St. put in and stay in the no wake zone; going upstream then turning around, passing our put in spot, and heading downstream and returning. There's a play in the water spot upstream and a shallow sand bank across from the put in that's near deep enough water to do some real swimming. Bring pfd, sunscreen, water, snack, bug spray, anything to make your paddle pleasant. July 6, Pelican Point Paddle

Meet: 4pm Sunday, July 6, meet at Pelican Point (at the end of Highway 1).
Notes: I plan to keep near the shore and paddle up the west side of Weeks Bay. I'm told there's houses, then a little marsh, then a nice beach just before you get to Camp Beckwith. I'm also told there could be dolphins playing in the water later in the afternoon. It's an easy paddle. We'll retrace our path and return before dark. Bring sunscreen and bug spray if you think you'll need them. It might also be good to bring a snack. Waves and wind might make me change our route. The good thing about that area is that changes are easy. Contact me if you're coming or considering coming. June Meeting:
The next meeting is Tuesday, June 3 at the Tensaw Theatre, Five Rivers Delta Resource Center.
Guest Speaker: Hank Burch, Director Five Rivers Resource Center, State Lands Division

Hank will be presenting on the history and acquisitions of all state lands through the Forever Wild Program. As a large portion of these tracts of land are in Mobile and Baldwin counties, this should be a very interesting and informative presentation. Forever Wild opens up many avenues of protected ecosystems with seasons of changing natural habitat for us to view and enjoy, along with providing opportunities for ecological research and education.
Hank gives wonderful presentations, we are most fortunate he is available for this meeting - don't miss this meeting. We are all aware of the Mobile-Tensaw Delta tracts of land, but there are some 20 or so more just in our two county area.


May Meeting Notes:
Thank you to Dave Armstrong with Wildlife and Fisheries for a wonderful presentation - there is life outside Mobile and Baldwin Counties guys.. saw many wonderful paddling opportunities in and around our surrounding counties, not to mention some really neat fishes. Can't wait to try a few of them (oopss, the launches and paddles, not the protected fishes.......).
A great turn-out - 48 people...

So, paddling season is here - keep check on the website, as more paddles will be happening than just those posted here. Don't miss some fun on the water - every paddle is a learning experience.

Time: 9:30 am Hoppe's Boat Ramp.
Notes: 6 mile paddle from Dog River bridge upstream on north side of river. This is a real estate paddle however there is enough wetlands to give variety. This is the time of year when there is a lot of boat traffic another reason we will be staying next to the shoreline. There is also the wind factor which can be not fun since this is large, open body of water. Saturday's forecast is wind 5-10 mph. Optional: Bring your bike and we can ride our bikes the 6 miles through the neighborhoods to pick up our vehicles. (Mountain bikes recommended-no sidewalks last mile also last 1/2 mile on Dauphin Island Parkway with five foot shoulder) Hoppe's Boat Launch is $5.00 just north of Dog River Bridge. Please RSVP for parking considerations and if you want to bring more lunch snacks. Snacks are good. Aven's menu: Soup and French Bread Sandwich. The weather is supposed to be dry. Notes: The First Full Moon Float of 2008 - don't miss it. Paddle duration 3 to 5 miles. Beginner friendly, but do have a level of comfort with your boat to paddle in semi-darkness. Paddle into either Bay Minette Basin or over to Yancy's Bay. Watch the sun set and paddle back under a rising full moon.Bring snack and drink, some to share if you want - we will raft together to enjoy the evening. Bug Spray, LIGHT (mandatory by law), a flashlight will be fine, pfd, regular paddling gear. Plan to gather together before departing to have a 1 minute chat about safety with night paddling and a large group. If you are coming, PLEASE call us - just in case plans change - but if you let us know you are coming, and are running a couple minutes late, we will wait for you. on a VERY DARK NIGHT - sometime in the near future (watch the moon schedule - we need NO moon for this one). It may be short notice - and will definitely be a great paddle - the opposite of the full moon. Everyone, get your lights handy, we'll need them at some point on this dark paddle but must follow the instruction of our leaders - group together, don't separate, turn on lights when they instruct). Tom will lead us through the constellations and show us some wonderful sites that are not readily visable to the eyes of anyone who lives in a light-filled town or city.... don't miss this one.
