*****FLASH*****FEBRUARY MONTHLY MEETING AT FAIRHOPE YACHT CLUB - BOATHOUSE BUILDING

The next meeting of the Mobile Bay Canoe and Kayak Club will be on Tuesday, February 7, 2006 at 7:00 p.m., at the Fairhope Yacht Club. Meetings are held on the first Tuesday of each month, same time, same place. When you drive down the hill to the bay, take the last turn left into the parking lot, to the boathouse building. After the usual club business of reporting on last month's trips and scheduling future paddles and events, we will have a good powerpoint photo presentation by Ian Brosnan, featuring Coast Guard missions between Alaska and Antarctica. He should have some spectacular shots, so this is a meeting you will want to attend.

****FLASH PADDLE****INGRAMS BAYOU

Date: Friday, February 17, 2006
Time: 9:00 AM
Place: Meet at Exxon station at Hwy 98 & CR95 east of Elberta, AL
Contact: Bob Andrews 251-367-4144
Comments: Paddle pristine waterway with abundant flora and fauna, (soon to be developed?), so see it now in its unaltered state. We'll be looking for mother/baby dolphins, as well as wintering snowbirds of the avian variety. We should be off the water around 1:00 p.m.- 1:30 p.m. Bring binoculars, cameras, paddle, life preserver, car keys, brown bag lunch, well rested body and your brightest smile. If you are one of the fortunate folks who have a fleet of boats to choose from, you may want to select a kayak in case of wind.
***NEW PADDLE ANNOUNCEMENT*** LITTLE BOILING CREEK & BOILING CREEK

Date: Saturday, February 4, 2006
Time: 10:15 AM
Place: Yellow River parking lot, Eglin AFB, FL
Contact: Gary Worob 850-259-9337
Directions: Take I-10 to exit 31 in Florida, which is Hwy 87 south, the last Milton exit going east, and travel south for several miles until you cross the Yellow River bridge (can't miss it) immediately on left is parking lot.
Comments: The trip will start at the road crossing over Little Boiling Creek. We will shuttle vehicles to the take-out at the mouth of Boiling Creek, and not continue down the Yellow River to the Hwy 87 bridge. This may be an adventure into the unknown for the first 1/4-1/2 mile, as we will likely encounter some blockages requiring some cutting, drag-overs or possible portages. It should not be very far, as we checked out the northern end of Little Boiling Creek recently and it is clear partway upstream heading towards the culvert.
The scenery will be extraordinary, as we will paddle down Little Boiling Creek and turn up Boiling Creek as far as it will allow. We will then return downstream, under the wooden bridge (normal put-in point) and continue to the take-out at the mouth (normal lunch spot).
Bring lunch, fluids, definately a recreation pass for Eglin, change of clothes, and saw if possible and sense of adventure.
If you do not have a pass yet, click on Frequently Asked Questions and scroll to the bottom for instructions. Now is the time to get your pass. Do not procrastinate any longer!
If anyone is interested in carpooling from Daphne, call Gary and he will set up. He is meeting at Boater's World and leaving at no later than 8:45 AM.

Grandman Triathlon, Fairhope Municipal Pier
June 3, 2006 7:00 AM - arrive by 6:30 AM

MBCAKC has been the team of kayak lifeguards since the triathlon began several years ago. Harriet Ingraham - 928.4568; hvk1457@aol.com is the kayak coordinator for this event. 10-15 kayakers are needed to line the swim race course, keeping swimmers on path and aiding tired swimmers who need a rest. Kayakers need to be in the water at the Fairhope Pier between 6:30 AM and 6:45 AM - after connecting with Harriet about positioning for the race. Please contact Harriet if you would like to volunteer. We, and Mobile Bay Watch received numerous positive comments about the MBCAKC presence last year and how secure all the swimmers felt by having us participate.

Remembrance of Larry Mickelson and his club paddles

Bruce Zimmerman found an old club paddle report from October 23, 2000, for a trip Larry, Sr., his son, Larry, Jr., Bruce and two others, who paddled all the way from Daphne to Fort Morgan. Larry, Sr. was particularly proud of this accomplishment.

You may read about this trip by clicking here.
Float Plan and Boating Emergency Guide

Have you ever been paddling or boating in a remote area, whether out offshore in the bay or gulf, or back in some remote bayou in the delta? Did you have a plan? Did anyone know where you were or when you were to return to civilization?

Click Float Plan Central for an easy to use, comprehensive float plan with step by step emergency guide instructions for the person responsible to contact authorities to locate you, if you were to get into trouble and not return as scheduled.
Larry Mickelson, Sr. passes away Friday, January, 13, 2006

We will miss Larry Mickelsen, Sr. - Redboat Mickelsen. For years, Larry delighted us with his kayak fishing tales (and filled me with envy for not being with him to catch those big Reds). He came aboard with our club, early in the club's infancy and was a faithful and valuable member. His tale of paddling from Pelican Point to Fort Morgan will always be in my memory. Larry was my right-hand man in kayak-lifeguarding, during the Pelican Point/Grandman Triathlon, and I will miss having his help and support.

We all will miss you Larry, and are thankful for your cheerful contributions to our club throughout the years.

Larry's memorial service will be held 5:30 PM, Wednesday, January 18, 2006, at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, 1410 U.S. Hwy. 98, Buildings K &L, in Daphne. Following the service, a reception will be held at East Shore Cafe on Main Street in Daphne. Burial will take place at a later date at Barrancas National Cemetery in Pensacola.
