Dauphin Island/Sand Island Flash Paddle!
Date: Saturday, May 29, 2004
Time: Paddle begins 8:00 a.m.
Meet: End of the road, East End, past Fort Gaines.
Paddler Level: Leader expects participating paddlers to have both open water and self-rescue experience.
Paddle: We'll launch in protected waters on the Southeast side of Dauphin Island, then paddle south across Pelican Bay to the south end of Sand Island (about 3 miles across open waters). After taking a break, we'll meander at a leisurely pace along Sand Island to the north end of the island (about another 3 miles), stopping from time to time to do some bird watching, so bring binoculars. You can also hunt shells, do some fishing, take pictures, walk the beaches, or go swimming. From there, we'll cross over and paddle along the shore of Dauphin Island back to the launch site, (about another 3 miles).
Gear: Don't forget your spray Skirt, fluids and nutrients you may need, sun screen, sun glasses (polarized - if you want to clearly see fish, sting rays, horseshoe crabs, etc.) and other similar gear.
