Comments: This will be a moderate paddle of approx. 9 miles round trip. We will go by way of Jessamine Bayou to the takeout point and hike 0.5 mi. to the Bottle Creek Indian Mound site. This is the largest known site (eighteen earthen mounds) of a Mississippian Period Indian culture on the north-central Gulf coast, who lived atop these mounds around 700 years ago. Excavations at Bottle Creek have uncovered prehistoric and historic Indian house floor plans dating back 3500 years. We will eat lunch there and return by the same route. Bring lunch, plenty of fluids, bug spray, and muddy walking shoes or sandals. Most of the paddle is in fairly narrow and shaded creeks and bayous. Plan on paddling at a moderate speed and being on the water and hike for about 4-5 hours.
