CALENDAR OF EVENTS - AUGUST 2003

August 8, Friday: Sand Island
Time: 6:30 p.m.
Place: Isle Dauphine Country Club, Dauphin Island
Contact: Larry McDuff 928-1582
Comments: Camp Friday night on Sand Island. This is a beginner-level paddle, about 1/2 mile.

August 9, Saturday: August Big Boy Paddle
Time: 7:00 a.m.
Place: Isle Dauphine Country Club, Dauphin Island
Contact: Larry McDuff 928-1582
Comments: Big Boy Option: Paddle from Sand Island about 2 miles to the Sand Island Lighthouse, which is no longer on Sand Island, and attempt an amphibious landing on the rock pile that supports the lighthouse by swimming from the kayaks to the rock pile. KAYAK RE-ENTRY SKILLS ARE REQUIRED. We will try to time our landing on Sand Island lighthouse to arrive before high tide at 8:36 a.m. One or two volunteers will be needed to hold the empty kayaks during the amphibious landing phase. Anyone wishing to only paddle to and explore Sand Island (beginner level) may arrive late and meet us on the way back.

Saturday, August 9: Upper Delta Paddle
Time: meet at 8 a.m.
Place: Conoco at I-65 and 225. Launch ~ $3 from Upper Bryants Landing.
Contact: Carl Hlavenka chlavenka@hotmail.com. (251) 604-7268.
Comments: 17-19 miles. Possible destinations inlcude Bayou Tallapoosa, Stiggins Lake, and Tensaw Loop Lake. Sections of Tallapoosa may require paddling thru downed trees or portages. Entrance to Stiggins Lake may involve swift currents and strainers. Bring extra dry clothes/raingear in case of long thunderstorms. This is a super-pretty paddle on big rivers, narrow creeks, and calm lakes in the remote upper delta.

This year it will be on Saturday, August 16 at the Beachcomber at the mouth of Dog River. The next meeting will be on September 2. As well as the usual business, we will vote on a T-shirt logo. Everybody is welcome to submit a logo design. If you can get to a copy shop between now and the meeting, please have your logo copied to transparency so we can display them on an overhead projector for the vote.

Thanks to Bob for his beautiful slide presentation at last night's meeting.
